How the GPA calculator works
Add courses with credits and letter grades — GPA is computed credit-weighted on the 4.0 scale, instantly. The planner tells you what average you need next semester to hit your target.
The GPA formula
GPA is a credit-weighted average: each course's grade points are multiplied by its credit hours, then divided by total credits.
GPA = Σ (grade points × credits) ÷ Σ (credits)
On the standard 4.0 scale: A = 4.0, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B− = 2.7, C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, F = 0.0. A 4-credit course counts twice as much as a 2-credit course — which is why a B in a heavy course hurts more than an A in a light one helps.
Worked example
Say you took 4 courses this semester:
- Math (3 credits): A = 4.0 → 4.0 × 3 = 12.0
- History (4 credits): B+ = 3.3 → 3.3 × 4 = 13.2
- Chemistry (3 credits): A− = 3.7 → 3.7 × 3 = 11.1
- English (2 credits): C+ = 2.3 → 2.3 × 2 = 4.6
Total grade points = 12.0 + 13.2 + 11.1 + 4.6 = 40.9. Total credits = 3 + 4 + 3 + 2 = 12. GPA = 40.9 ÷ 12 = 3.41. Try these exact numbers in the calculator above — you should get the same result.
Frequently asked questions
How is GPA calculated?
Each grade converts to points (A = 4.0 … F = 0), multiplied by credits. Total points divided by total credits.
Weighted vs unweighted GPA?
Unweighted caps at 4.0. This calculator uses the standard 4.0 unweighted scale.
How does the planner work?
Enter current GPA, target, credits earned and upcoming credits — it solves for the average you need next term.
Include pass/fail courses?
No — leave them out; they don't affect GPA on the 4.0 scale.
