How the fraction calculator works
Three tools in one page: calculate (add, subtract, multiply or divide any two fractions), simplify any fraction to lowest terms, and convert decimals to fractions. Every answer comes as an improper fraction, a mixed number and a decimal — with step-by-step working you can actually learn from.
The rules, quickly
Add/subtract: common denominator first, then combine numerators. Multiply: straight across. Divide: flip the second fraction and multiply. Always simplify at the end by dividing top and bottom by their GCD.
Frequently asked questions
How do you add fractions with different denominators?
Find a common denominator (multiply the two denominators), convert each fraction, then add the numerators. Our calculator shows every step so you can follow along — try 1/4 + 1/3 above.
What does 'simplify' mean?
Divide the top and bottom by their greatest common divisor (GCD). For 8/12 the GCD is 4, so it simplifies to 2/3. Simplified fractions are easier to compare and use.
How do I turn a decimal into a fraction?
Put the decimal over a power of 10 (0.75 = 75/100) then simplify (→ 3/4). The converter tab does this instantly, finding the closest simple fraction.
What is a mixed number?
A whole number plus a fraction, like 2 1/2 instead of 5/2. We show both forms so you can use whichever your homework asks for.
