How the statistics calculator works
Paste your numbers and get the full rundown: count, sum, mean, median, mode, range, variance and standard deviation (both formulas), plus a mini histogram of the spread.
Sample vs population
Whole group? Use population. A sample of something bigger? Use sample (default) — the conservative choice most textbooks expect.
Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between sample and population standard deviation?
Use population when your numbers ARE the whole group. Use sample (the default) when they're a subset — it divides by n−1, giving a slightly larger, more honest estimate.
What does standard deviation tell me?
How spread out numbers are around the average. Small SD = values cluster near the mean; large SD = they're all over the place.
When should I use median instead of mean?
When outliers skew things — house prices, incomes. The median (middle value) ignores extremes; the mean doesn't.
Why is there no mode sometimes?
If every value appears exactly once, there's no most-common value — normal for continuous measurements.
