What is take-home pay?
Take-home pay is what remains after Canadian federal income tax is taken from your gross salary. On a C$100,000 salary, federal tax is about C$14,037.93, leaving roughly C$85,962.07. Note this covers federal tax only — provincial tax (which varies by province) is not included. Compare with our US salary calculator.
How take-home pay is calculated
Canada (2025 federal figures)
- Federal income tax: 15% to $57,375, 20.5% to $114,750, 26% to $177,882, 29% to $253,414, 33% above — after the $16,129 basic personal amount. Only income inside each bracket is taxed at that bracket's rate.
- Provincial tax: not included — every province adds its own tax on top (Ontario, BC, Quebec and others all differ).
Reverse mode: enter the take-home you want, and the calculator works backwards to the gross salary you need (solved by iteration).
Salary comparison: save any result with "Add to comparison" and stack scenarios side by side — different states, salaries, or countries — to see which pays more.
Worked example
C$100,000 salary: taxable = C$100,000 − C$16,129 = C$83,871. Federal tax = 15% of C$57,375 (C$8,606.25) + 20.5% of C$26,496 (C$5,431.68) = C$14,037.93. Take-home ≈ C$85,962.07/year before provincial tax. Try it above.
Frequently asked questions
Does this include provincial tax?
No — this calculator covers 2025 Canadian federal tax only. Provincial taxes (e.g. Ontario, Quebec, BC) are charged on top and vary widely, so treat the result as a before-province estimate.
What is the basic personal amount?
The first $16,129 of income is free from federal tax in 2025. Most provinces have their own basic personal amount too.
How are bonuses taxed in Canada?
Bonuses are employment income — taxed at your marginal rate like salary, though employers often withhold a flat 20–30% upfront and square up at filing time.
What is the difference between marginal and average tax rate?
Your marginal rate is the tax on your next dollar (your top bracket). Your average rate is total tax ÷ income — on C$100,000 the marginal rate is 20.5% but the average federal rate is about 14%.
