What is take-home pay?
Take-home pay (net pay) is what actually lands in your bank account after federal tax, payroll (FICA) tax, and state tax are taken out of your gross salary. On a $100,000 salary in Texas, that's about $78,736 — federal ($13,614) and FICA ($7,650) take the rest. In California, state tax takes another ~$5,327, leaving about $73,409. Enter your salary, period, and state above to see your number instantly.
How take-home pay is calculated
United States (2025 figures, single filer)
- Federal income tax: 10% to $11,925, 12% to $48,475, 22% to $103,350, 24% to $197,300, 32% to $250,525, 35% to $626,350, 37% above — after the $15,000 standard deduction. Only income inside each band is taxed at that band's rate.
- FICA payroll tax: Social Security 6.2% on the first $176,100 of wages, Medicare 1.45% on all wages, plus 0.9% additional Medicare over $200,000.
- State income tax: all 50 states + DC with 2025 single-filer brackets and standard deductions (Tax Foundation). Nine states have no wage income tax.
Reverse mode: enter the take-home you want, and the calculator works backwards to the gross salary you need (solved by iteration).
Salary comparison: save any result with "Add to comparison" and stack scenarios side by side — different states, salaries, or countries — to see which pays more.
Worked example
$100,000 salary, Connecticut: federal = $13,614.00 (on $85,000 taxable), Social Security = $6,200.00, Medicare = $1,450.00, Connecticut state = $3,925.00 (on $85,000 taxable). Total tax = $25,189.00. Take-home = $74,811.00/year — $6,234.25/month, $2,877.35 biweekly. Try it above.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my take-home lower than other calculators show?
Many simple calculators skip FICA (7.65% on most salaries) and state tax entirely — this one includes both, using 2025 federal, FICA, and state figures. That is why the number looks smaller, and more realistic.
How does reverse calculation work?
Enter the annual take-home you want, switch to "Take-home → required gross", and the calculator solves backwards through the tax brackets to find the gross salary that produces it. Useful when negotiating an offer around a target net pay.
Which states have no income tax?
Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming levy no tax on wage income. (Washington taxes capital gains only.) Pick any of them in the state dropdown to see the difference.
What is FICA?
FICA (Federal Insurance Contributions Act) tax funds Social Security and Medicare. In 2025 it's 6.2% for Social Security on the first $176,100 of wages plus 1.45% Medicare on all wages (your employer matches both). High earners pay an extra 0.9% Medicare over $200,000.
