How the age calculator works

Enter your date of birth and get your exact age in years, months and days — plus the total in months, weeks, days, hours, minutes and seconds. Leave the second date empty to use today, or fill it to measure the interval between any two dates.

We also show your next birthday: the date, the weekday, how many days away, and which birthday you'll be turning.

How the calculation works

Age is computed by calendar subtraction, not by dividing total days by 365. The method: subtract the birth year, month and day from the target date's year, month and day, borrowing from months and years when a value goes negative — exactly like manual subtraction. This keeps the result exact, because months have different lengths and a "year" here means a full trip around the calendar, not 365 days.

For the totals (total days, hours, minutes, seconds), we count the actual elapsed days between the two dates, so leap days are included automatically.

Worked example

Born 15 March 1990, measured to 18 October 2026: the birthday has already passed this year (October is after March), so full years = 2026 − 1990 = 36. Months: October − March = 7. Days: 18 − 15 = 3. Age = 36 years, 7 months, 3 days. Total days = 13,366 (including 9 leap days from 1992–2024). Try it in the calculator — you should get the same result.

Leap years, handled

Because the math runs on real calendar dates, leap years (like 29 Feb birthdays) are counted correctly — no manual adjustment needed.

Frequently asked questions

How is age calculated exactly?

We count full years, then remaining months, then days — borrowing from months like you learned in school. Leap years are handled automatically because we use real calendar dates.

Can I find the time between any two dates?

Yes — put the earlier date as date of birth and the later date as the target. You'll get the full interval in years, months, days, and total smaller units.

Why does the total-days number matter?

It's handy for things like visa day-counts, baby milestones, work anniversaries and fitness streaks — anywhere 'how many days has it been' is the real question.

What if I was born on 29 February?

In non-leap years your birthday legally falls on 28 February or 1 March depending on the country. Our next-birthday countdown uses 1 March in non-leap years.
